At Florence Street Family Practice, we have always believed that great healthcare is built on more than just clinical skill – it’s about knowing your patients, understanding their lives, and walking alongside them on their health journey. When we welcome a new doctor to our team, we don’t do it lightly. We’re thrilled to introduce Dr Nick Fountas – a doctor whose background, qualifications, and personal approach to medicine make him a truly exciting addition to our practice.
A Remarkable Academic and Clinical Foundation
Dr Nick’s credentials speak for themselves. He graduated with Honours from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery – a degree that already places him among the highest achievers in his field. But he didn’t stop there. He went on to complete a Masters of Surgery, also from the University of Sydney, and holds a Graduate Diploma in Applied Anatomy from the University of New England. This combination of surgical training and deep anatomical knowledge gives Dr Nick a level of clinical insight that goes well beyond what you’d expect from a GP, and it’s something our patients are set to benefit from enormously.
What this means in practical terms is that when Dr Nick examines a patient – whether it’s a sore shoulder, a workplace injury, or a concerning skin lesion – he brings a level of structural and anatomical understanding that allows him to assess, diagnose, and guide treatment with real precision. He doesn’t just treat the symptom; he understands the body behind it.
A Career Built Across Diverse Specialties
Before joining Florence Street Family Practice, Dr Nick built an impressive clinical career across some of Sydney’s most demanding healthcare environments. He has worked in orthopaedic surgery across Sydney and the Hunter region, giving him hands-on experience with musculoskeletal conditions, joint problems, and complex physical injuries. He has also worked across skin cancer clinics, occupational medicine, and sports clinics – a breadth of experience that is rare and genuinely valuable in a GP setting.
His Areas of Interest – Aligned Perfectly with Our Community’s Needs
One of the things that excites us most about Dr Nick joining the team is how naturally his areas of interest align with the services and values at Florence Street Family Practice. Let’s take a closer look at what he’s passionate about, and why it matters to you.
Chronic Disease Management is one of Dr Nick’s key interests, and it’s one of the cornerstone services we offer here at the practice. Managing conditions like diabetes, asthma, and heart disease requires consistency, trust, and a doctor who genuinely understands the long-term picture. Dr Nick’s patient-centred approach makes him well-placed to support patients navigating these ongoing health challenges.
Men’s Health is another area close to Dr Nick’s heart. At Florence Street Family Practice, we know that men are statistically less likely to seek medical help – and when they do, they often need a doctor who’s approachable, direct, and non-judgemental. From prostate checks and heart health assessments to mental health support, Dr Nick’s interest in men’s health means our male patients now have another excellent advocate in their corner.
Sports Injuries are another passion area, and one that makes particular sense given his clinical background in sports clinics and orthopaedic surgery. Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a competitive athlete, or someone who has simply overdone it at the gym, Dr Nick has the hands-on experience to assess, manage, and guide your recovery.
Skin Cancer Checks round out an area of deep personal expertise for Dr Nick. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and regular skin checks are one of the most important preventive health measures anyone can take. Dr Nick’s experience working in dedicated skin cancer clinics means he brings a trained and experienced eye to every examination – something that could, quite literally, save a life.
Finally, New Workplace Injuries speak directly to Dr Nick’s background in occupational medicine. Managing a workplace injury well from the very beginning can make a significant difference to a patient’s recovery, their return to work, and their long-term wellbeing. Dr Nick’s experience with workers’ compensation care complements our existing services in this area perfectly.
A Doctor Who Connects with People
Beyond the qualifications and the clinical expertise, what truly sets Dr Nick apart is his approach to people. Originally from Canada and having trained and worked across multiple healthcare settings in Australia, he brings a natural warmth and worldliness to his consultations. He is fluent in both English and Greek, which makes him especially accessible to members of our local Greek-speaking community – a meaningful touch that reflects the kind of inclusive, personalised care we strive to offer every patient who walks through our doors.
Dr Nick’s core philosophy – combining empathy, compassion, and patient-centredness with clinical excellence – is exactly what Florence Street Family Practice stands for.
